This is a very valuable piece written by Professor Suiho Kuwahara, who also instructed His Majesty the Emperor, in his 30s.

Born in 1906 in Kawanishi-gun Obihiro-cho, Hokkaido (present-day Obihiro City). In 1921, he entered the Sapporo Railway Training School and began to focus on calligraphy after studying under Tsuruto Otsuka. He also met Tei Kaneko and Hanyu Miyake, who would later become calligraphers, during his time at the railway training school. After graduating from the railway training school in 1924 and starting a job, he was encouraged to move to Tokyo by Kotei Kawaya and Tenrai Hida, who successively visited Hokkaido. In 1932, he moved to Tokyo with Kaneko and subsequently studied under Tenrai Hida. The following year, he joined the Shodo Geijutsu-sha, which was formed with Kyujo Ueda as its central figure.

After the war, while maintaining a certain distance from the calligraphy world, Kuwahara, like his teacher Tenrai, traveled throughout Japan, distributing his calligraphy and striving to spread Tenrai's style (hence, he was also called a traveling calligrapher). It is said that many of Kuwahara's works remain in various places even today.

In 1972, he became a calligraphy instructor at the Imperial Palace.

He passed away on March 27, 1995. A video of Kuwahara's interview and calligraphy demonstration, filmed in 1995, remains, in which Kuwahara writes March 19, Heisei 7 (1995), showing that he was vigorous until his very last years.
