Vintage West African Hausa and Fulani weavers of Northern Nigeria large basket

Description
West African basket, matching the traditional coiled construction methods of the Hausa and Fulani weavers of Northern Nigeria. What the Inside Reveals Coiling Technique: You can clearly see the thick, bundled inner core (usually split palm fronds or savanna grasses) being wrapped and secured by outer fibers. The stitches are spaced slightly apart, a characteristic construction technique for utility baskets from this region. Decorative Start: The center of the lid features a tight, dyed reddish-brown target swirl where the weaving began. This type of colored starting coil is a very common design element in Nigerian coiled basketry. Carried-Through Design: The geometric dark brown blocks and thin horizontal stripes run completely through to the inside, showing that dyed fibers were woven directly into the structural walls rather than painted on after the basket was finished.
