Murakami Wood-Carved Tsuishu is a traditional craft with a history of approximately 600 years, made in Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture. It is a durable lacquerware finished by carving designs such as flowers and birds onto wood and then applying and layering natural lacquer. It was protected as a specialty product of the domain during the Edo period. It has a characteristic matte, subdued texture that gradually gains gloss with use.
