Description
Vintage 48-star American flag by Annin under its Defiance brand. Nominal 3' x 5' size, measuring approximately 35 x 58 including the canvas hoist. Constructed with individually pieced and machine-sewn red and white stripes and a dyed/printed 48-star canton. Heavy canvas hoist with original Annin/Defiance maker's label, original “3 x 5 FT” size stamp and metal grommets. The 48-star flag was the official United States flag from 1912–1959. The original label reads “Defiance / Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. / Two Ply – Moth Proof / Guaranteed Defiance Fast Colors.” Canvas hoist bears a handwritten vintage inscription reading “Hinsdale 1969.” Remarkably nice vintage condition with no holes, stains, fraying or repairs observed. Some age-related fading and toning consistent with age. Colors remain attractive and the original manufacturer's label is very well preserved. Exact date of manufacture is unknown. Sold as a vintage collectible; no claim is made regarding specific military or burial provenance.
