Bizen Ware Guinomi (Sake Cup) by Katsura Morimoto of Kumayama Kiln (Includes Paulownia Box) (156)

Thank you for looking.

This is a guinomi (sake cup) by Katsura Morimoto of Kumayama Kiln, Bizen ware. (Comes in a paulownia wood box.)

Size: Approximately 6cm in diameter, 5.5cm in height.

Bizen ware, fired without glaze, is characterized by its simple, earthy texture and the natural color variations that occur during firing, known as yohen (kiln transformation).

Material and Method: This pottery is made in the Bizen City area of Okayama Prefecture, using high-quality clay and fired at high temperatures of approximately 1200-1300°C for extended periods without any glaze.

Kiln Transformation: Unique patterns and color variations are created on the surface of each piece due to ash, charcoal, and temperature fluctuations within the kiln. The reddish-brown areas (hidasuki and sankiri) seen in the images, as well as the rough texture, are typical examples of this keshiki (scenery).

Guinomi: A relatively large sake cup, said to be derived from the phrase guito nomu (to drink heartily), suitable for enjoying Japanese sake.

Aging: One of its charms is that it becomes more comfortable to hold and develops a richer flavor with continued use.
