This is a rare Martin style A mandolin from 1919, listed at a bargain price due to its condition. (It is perfectly playable as an instrument.)

The reasons for it being listed as junk are as follows:

- Multiple crack repairs on the top.
- A thin overcoat across the entire top surface. There are areas where the coat is peeling near and around the bridge. (We suspect a pickup may have been attached to the top.)
- The sides and back appear to be original finish, but this cannot be confirmed. The overcoat is very thin, suggesting it has been on for a considerable number of years.
- While instruments from the 1910s-1920s typically do not have a logo on the headstock, a decal from the 1940s or later has been applied. (It is quite skillfully done, so it's possible Martin themselves worked on it, but details are unknown.) The headstock veneer is Jacaranda, and there is a Martin stamp on the back, indicating it is a pre-war instrument.

For these reasons, it is listed at a bargain price.

Nevertheless, the serial number is four digits, confirming it is indeed over 100 years old, from 1919.
All parts are original.
Notably, the pre-war style reverse tuning machines, tailpiece, bridge, and the extremely thin tortoiseshell-patterned pickguard (with numerous cracks) are all still present, which in itself is quite valuable.

While it is at an antique level, with proper maintenance, it can still be used for recording and live performances. It features rosewood binding, beautiful grain of Honduras mahogany, a Jacaranda fingerboard, and of course, the sound is characteristically Martin – delicate and pastoral.
